The Snow Queen at The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati *GIVEAWAY*

Good Life Snow Queen SliderI love to go to the theater, especially around the holidays.  It just helps get everyone into the spirit of Christmas!  What better way to kick off this holiday season than with a live performance of The Snow Queen at The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati? Starting Friday December 5th and running through Sunday December 13th, you can catch a performance at the Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati. There are a total of six performances for The Snow Queen, listed at the end of this post.

Check out what The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati has to say about the show:

The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati continues its 90th MainStage Season celebration with THE SNOW QUEEN, directed by Jay Goodlett. Music by Steve Goers, book and lyrics by Alyn Cardarelli.

Embrace the season with this chilling show, based on the original frozen fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson.  In this wintry tale, a prince and princess find themselves torn apart by an ill-advised wish that the Snow Queen must grant during the Winter Solstice.  Come see Prince Kai, Princess Gerda and her comrades as they enter a world of the unknown to reunite with each other once again.

The story has been adapted by Chicago playwright Alyn Cardarelli, along with his Cincinnati writing partner Steve Goers.  Their collaborations on musicals for children include world premiere adaptations of Where the Wild Things Are, Stellaluna, and How I Became a Pirate. Productions of THE SNOW QUEEN were featured twice in the history of The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati — once in 1965 performed at the Emery Theatre and once in 1975 performed at the Taft Theatre. THE SNOW QUEEN is ideal for family with children ages 4+.

Public performances of the show are:

  • Friday December 5, 7:30pm
  • Saturday December 6, 2:00pm and 5:00pm
  • Sunday, December 7, 2:00pm
  • Saturday  December 13, 2:00pm and 5:00pm

LongHorn Steakhouse *Giveaway*

LongHorn Harvest Mushroom FiletLast Saturday, my husband and I had the chance to try out some new menu items at LongHorn Steakhouse in Florence Kentucky.  As the seasons change, the popular steakhouse rolls out new items on their Peak Season and Chef’s Showcase menus.

They were delicious.

We started the evening with drinks and bread.  I was picky, of course, and asked for a caramel appletini…hey, it’s a great Fall drink!

They don’t make those.

But, they got creative and came up with a recipe!  What a great place!  My husband stuck to the drink menu and ordered a dark beer. Both were great openers for dinner.LongHorn Bleu Ridge Wedge Salad

From the seasonal and Chef’s Showcase menus, we tried the Harvest Mushroom Filet, Bleu Ridge Wedge Salad and Pumpkin Spice Lava Cake.  We also enjoyed several other items on the classic menu.  They did not disappoint!  We were stuffed when we left.

Seriously, I think I went up a pants size.

The steak was cooked just right and you could smell the Pumpkin Spice Lava Cake as soon as the server set it on the table.  What a great way to enjoy Fall.

LongHorn Pumpkin Spice Lava CakeNot only was the food delicious, but we discovered that LongHorn has call ahead seating!

I had no idea!

With time being a hot commodity these days, I love this.  Often, we skip large chain restaurants because of the lengthy wait, but now that we know this, we’ll be back soon.  We called ahead Saturday and it was nice to wait about 2 minutes for our table.  It was crowded that evening, so we could have faced at least a 45 minute wait.

Check out the new Fall dishes at LongHorn:

Peak Season: Created to highlight the best ingredients of the season. This fall, the menu celebrates freshness and hearty fall flavors.

  • Brew Pub Pretzel Sticks (appetizer) – Warm pretzel breadsticks served with Sam Adams beer cheese and bacon honey mustard.
  • New Potato & Leek Au Gratin (side) – Layered with aged white cheddar & bacon, topped with Parmesan breadcrumbs.
  • Mushroom Truffle Bisque (soup) – Smooth, Creamy, Rich-flavored soup with an earthy mushroom flavor and a sour cream drizzle.
  • Bleu Ridge Wedge Salad – Crisp heart of romaine topped with ripe tomatoes, applewood smoked bacon, crumbled bleu cheese, red onions and bleu cheese dressing.
  • Pumpkin Spice Lava Cake – Warm pumpkin spice cake, cream cheese icing, Maker’s Mark bourbon caramel sauce and candied pecans.

Chef’s Showcase: Celebrates LongHorn’s Executive Chefs’ culinary inspiration and creativity.

  •  Harvest Mushroom Filet – Our most tender center-cut filet topped with shiitake, oyster and cremini mushrooms in a hearty red wine bordelaise.
  • Apple Cider Baby Back Ribs Fall-off-the-bone ribs coated with a housemade sweet & savory hard cider BBQ glaze.

Would you like to try out the new seasonal menu at LongHorn?  They were nice enough to give me a $25 LongHorn Steak House gift card to give away to one lucky I’m Living the Good Life Reader!

Must be 18 years of age to enter and live in the surrounding area.  Gift card will be mailed via USPS to winner.  Winner will be selected randomly on Monday November 17th and announced on Facebook.  Winner has 24 hours to respond or another will be selected.

“Our lives were forever changed because of the care we received from the physicians at Cincinnati Children’s,” said co-founder Anne Schneider. “We created Bluegrass for Babies to not only raise funds for the hospital, but with the goal to also also educate parents on raising healthy children.”

The concert lineup features performances by Ma Crow & The Lady Slippers, Comet Bluegrass All-Stars, and Hickory Robot. Ma Crow & The Lady Slippers will kick things off, performing at 3:00pm with the Comet Bluegrass All-Stars taking to the stage at 5:00pm. Rounding out the evening at 6:45 pm will be Hickory Robot.  Special guest Jennifer Ellis will perform her popular children’s songs at 4:15pm.

Check out the five interactive experiences:

Adventures Around Cincinnati: Giveaway Closed

Adventures Around Cinci small

This giveaway is now closed.  Congratulations to Kathy B who follows I’m Living the Good Life on Pinterest!

Our Spring Break this year was jam packed.  We had a few sleepovers, we went to Gatlinburg, we ran around town…it was busy and it was fun.  But, on that last day before getting back into a routine, meaning school, the kids were B-O-R-E-D.  I would normally just ignore them and tell them to find some fun, but they were so dramatic in expressing their boredom that I could no longer take it.

I loaded them up in the van and went to Kroger for gas.

Exciting, I know.

Then I remembered something I read in my Adventures Around Cincinnati book (Second Edition).  The Anderson Ferry!  It’s close to our house.  It’s super cheap.  It doesn’t take a lot of time.  It’s different.  And, it’s definitely an adventure.

So, off we went, down I-275.  I did not tell the kids where we were going until they saw the river and the boat ramp.  I just kept driving as their eyes got huge and I yelled “We’re going to drive the van across the river on a boat!”  We road across once in the van, turned around on the other side and rode back.  This time we got out of the van and stood next to the railing to catch the breeze.  They were thrilled and said it was the best way to end Spring Break.  It even made it into my fourth grader’s “What I Did Over Spring Break” paper.

Thanks to Adventures Around Cincinnati, I found a great adventure.  This guide book is filled with fun outings around town and close by for your family.

“Experience over 80 kid-tested destinations within a 2-hour drive of Cincinnati.”

There are several other adventures I’d like to plan for the summer and a few spur of the moment places I’ll keep in my back pocket for ‘boring’ days like that Sunday afternoon.  Authors Terri Weeks and Laura Hoevener have done a fantastic job of investigating places to explore with kids and detailing them in their book.  They’ve listed a description of places to visit, sample itineraries, an index of facilities and more.  There are obvious places like Kings Island and then hidden gems like the Anderson Ferry.  There are loads more, but I can’t spill the beans here!  You should get a copy right away!

Would you like to win a copy of Adventures Around Cincinnati the second edition?  Terri and Laura have been nice enough to give one lucky I’m Living the Good Life reader a copy of their book!  Here’s how to enter:

Tell me your favorite adventure in or around this area.  Leave a comment below.

For bonus entries (leave a comment for each):

That’s it.  Enter now and a winner will be randomly selected Thursday May 1st at 8:00pm.  Must be 18 to enter and live in this area.  Once announced on Facebook, the winner has 24 hours to respond or another will be drawn.  Good luck!

Disclaimer:  I was given a copy of Adventures Around Cincinnati to review and keep in exchange for this review.  Rest assured, all opinions are my own…I truly love the book and can’t wait to have more adventures!

CampFinder.Co was created by local entrepreneurs Brennan Sweeney and JB Woodruff, ex-technology consultants turned entrepreneurs who met while volunteering at a local startup incubator. The idea for CampFinder came to Sweeney when he was searching for camps and struggling to find not only a place online that offered a comprehensive listing, but also one that shared reviews and shed light on the experience his son might have.

“What better way to find a great camp program than hearing about it from people you know or who have experienced it?” notes Woodruff. “We’re harnessing the power of word of mouth referrals and leveraging the power of the web to help parents find the best memory-making experiences for their kids.”

A complete camp profile will include a geographic location listing, a photo gallery, programs list with detailed descriptions, website and other contact info as well as information regarding pricing, program dates, and camper age.

“Our region is home to so many great camps, we want to help those camps get noticed and at the same time we want to make it easier for parents find the perfect camps for their kids,” said Sweeney.
