Shrek the Musical Jr. At The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati

Shrek and FionaMy kids love Shrek. They love the movies and the holiday show. It’s one of those animated shows that even adults enjoy. When I heard that Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati had a stage version, I was super excited! I was even more excited because my favorite actor was returning…Bob Herzog, as Donkey!

Everyone’s favorite ogre is back in SHREK THE MUSICAL JR., the hilarious stage spectacle based on the Oscar-winning smash hit film.  The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati brings this production to life on the Taft Theatre stage April 8-10, 16-17, 2016.

In a faraway kingdom, the green ogre Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits, runaways who’ve been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wise-cracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he’s handed a task – if he rescues feisty Princess Fiona from the Dragon-guarded tower, his swamp will be returned to him. But, a fairy tale wouldn’t be complete without unexpected twists and turns along the way.

Based on the DreamWorks Animation Motion Picture and the book by William Steig.  Book and Lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire.  Music by Jeanine Tesori.  Originally produced on Broadway by DreamWorks Theatricals and Neal Street Productions.  Original production directed by Jason Moore and Rob Ashford.  “I’m a Believer” by Neil Diamond.  Puppets by The Frisch Marionettes. Old West Festival 2015 GIVEAWAY

Old+West+Boots sliderAre you ready for Fall?  Not yet?  Me neither.
BUT, I am ready for the Old West Festival!  And, if summer has to end, there’s no better way to kick off Fall than by watching a rootin’ tootin’ gun fight (re-enacted of course), drinking some rootbeer, and dusting off my cowboy boots.

This year marks the 8th annual Old West Festival and I’m super excited. As usual, there are theme weekends:

Western Film Weekend Sept. 12-13
Romance Weekend Sept. 19-20
America’s Pastime Weekend Sept. 26-27
Steampunk Weekend Oct. 3-4
OctoBEERfest Weekend Oct. 10-11
Halloween Weekend Oct. 17-18

One of the things I love about this festival is that it is a permanent display! This town is up all year round and is open for visitors September 12th Old+West+Horsesthrough October 18th, weekends only. The festival is located just 15 minutes from I-275, East of Cincinnati.

Here’s more about the festival:

Drawing more than twenty thousand visitors each fall, the permanent old west town is home to everything you would expect to see in Dodge City circa 1878. Attendees will enjoy historically accurate medicine and saloon shows, can-can dancers, gunfights, jailbreaks, and more. Period reenactors will also be found walking the streets and performing the roles of cowboys, cowgirls, storeowners, residents, and of course, outlaws.

The Old West Festival will also be abuzz with western music. Attendees can enjoy the sounds of the 1800’s with music from Gunpowder Creek as well as Raison d’Etre, a trio mixing traditional folk songs with a capella swing tunes and Shaker hymns.

Other performers will be ‘round town as well. Magician Jason Jacobs will amaze, bewilder and astonish with his magical flare and the Pickled Brothers will shock with their mind-boggling performances. Trick rider Abigail Petersen will impress audiences with her horsemanship and daring stunts, while visitors to the Long Branch Saloon will enjoy shows by world champion roper Rider Keisner, and folks will no doubt get a “kick” out of Miss Melody Star and her Hurdy Gurdy Dancing Girls.

And what would the old west be without a good ole’ fashioned gunfight? Back by popular demand, four times daily starting at high noon, the Big Irons Rangers return with their gunfight re-enactments and trick shooting. In between shows they, and other period interpreters, will be walking the grounds to meet visitors and pose for photos.

The Old West Festival is a grand time for the young’ins, too. At 10:15 a.m. daily, the kiddies can get sworn in as town deputies. They can also enjoy old-timey puppet and magic shows, storytelling and sing-a-longs. The youngsters can also participate in historic games, pan for gold, take a ride on the A&A Express train, take a pony ride, and even cross the frontier in a covered wagon.

To celebrate the opening of another season, the Old West Festival presents Western Film Weekend. Iconic scenes of cowboys riding into the sunset, saloon brawls and gunfights have shaped our idea of the Wild West. Guests will enjoy screenings from classic movies, experience a lively panel discussion and meet the cast and crew from Revelation Trail, a western film shot on the grounds of the Old West Festival.

If you go on Saturday February 21st, don’t miss Kid’s Kuisine, a tasty fundraiser for The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati, presented by Cincinnati Magazine from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM at the Taft Theatre Ballroom, 317 E. 5th Street, prior to the 2 PM performance of SCHOOL HOUSE ROCK LIVE! JR.   Kid’s Kuisine guests will enjoy food and drink from exciting sponsors while area restaurants will showcase creative kid’s menus.  There will also be “Play with your Food” stations plus young chefs will get inspired at the cooking stage. Children’s and adult tickets are $10 per guest when purchased in advance and $15 per guest at the door.  To purchase visit cincinnatimagazine.com/cmevents or call Chris Ohmer at 513-562-2777.

Disclaimer:  I was given complementary tickets for the show in exchange for this giveaway and review.  All opinions are my own.
